I meet a man named John, we exchange pleasantries, he asks what I do for a living, I respond, “I am a Graphic Designer”, he asks what that entails. Before I give myself enough time to think I follow with “I make things look pretty for a living”. Once again I have under-sold myself as a designer and insulted my fellow compatriots.
What a good Graphic Designer really does.
This may seem like a stupid question to a lot of people, however, I am often asked what it is a graphic designer actually does. Below you will find what I hope is a more coherent answer to this question.
Graphic Designers use visual elements such as type, colours, images, and illustrations to communicate a message. These messages usually serve to promote a service, product, philosophy or entity. If you run a business or you have a new product, service or idea you will want to make it as successful as possible. A good Graphic Designer will know the best way to market your business/idea/product/service. They will present it in a visually engaging way capturing the attention of a specific target market.
